What to Do When Your AC Breaks in a Texas Summer: Emergency Guide

By Omar Jacobo, Licensed HVAC Technician (EPA 608 #2396328)

Your AC Just Died. Don't Panic — Read This.

I'm Omar Jacobo, owner of Frosty's HVAC (TACLA126718E, EPA 608 #2396328). If you're reading this on your phone because your house is already 85°F and climbing, I get it. I've taken these calls hundreds of times since starting Frosty's on January 1, 2018. July and August in DFW are brutal — outdoor temps hit 100-110°F, and without AC, your home can reach dangerous temperatures within a few hours.

Here's exactly what to do, step by step.

Step 1: Check the Simple Things First (5 Minutes)

Before you call anyone, check these — because about 15% of "AC emergency" calls I get are something the homeowner can fix themselves:

  • Thermostat: Is it set to "cool"? Is the fan set to "auto"? Is the set temperature below the current room temperature? Check the batteries if it's battery-powered. A dead thermostat looks like a dead AC.
  • Air filter: Pull it out and look at it. If it's solid grey and you can't see through it, the system may have shut down from airflow restriction. Replace it with a fresh one and give the system 30 minutes.
  • Breaker panel: Check the breaker for your AC (there may be two — one for the indoor unit, one for the outdoor unit). If either is tripped, flip it off, wait 30 seconds, flip it back on. If it trips again immediately, stop — there's an electrical issue. Do not keep resetting it.
  • Outdoor unit: Go look at it. Is the fan spinning? Is it making any sound at all? If it's completely silent and the breaker is on, you likely have a failed capacitor or contactor — both are repairable same-day in most cases.
  • Condensate drain: Some systems have a float switch on the drain line. If the drain is clogged, the float switch shuts the system down to prevent water damage. If you see water pooled around the indoor unit, this is likely the cause.

Step 2: Protect Your Family from the Heat

This is not a comfort issue — it's a safety issue. Heat stroke is a medical emergency, and Texas summer heat inside an uncooled home is genuinely dangerous. The CDC reports that extreme heat kills more Americans than any other weather event.

Immediate actions:

  • Close blinds and curtains on south- and west-facing windows. Solar heat gain through windows can add 10-15°F to a room.
  • Use fans. Ceiling fans, box fans, any fans. They don't cool the air but they move air across your skin, which helps your body cool itself.
  • Stay hydrated. Drink water constantly. Don't wait until you're thirsty — by that point you're already dehydrated.
  • Move vulnerable people. Elderly family members, young children, and pets are at highest risk. If the house reaches 85°F and you can't get cooling within a few hours, take them to a friend's house, a library, a mall, or any air-conditioned public space.
  • Watch for heat stroke symptoms: Hot, red skin with no sweating; confusion or slurred speech; rapid pulse; headache; nausea. Call 911 immediately if you see these signs.
  • Don't open windows if it's hotter outside than inside. When it's 105°F outside, opening windows makes your house hotter, not cooler.

Step 3: Call a Licensed HVAC Company

Now call. Here's what to look for in an emergency:

  • TACLA license: Don't let the emergency make you call the first unlicensed person on Facebook. A bad repair on top of a broken AC is worse than waiting two hours for a licensed tech.
  • Same-day availability: Most reputable companies offer same-day emergency service. At Frosty's, we prioritize emergency calls across Farmers Branch, Coppell, Irving, Flower Mound, Lewisville, and Grapevine.
  • Clear pricing before they start: Even in an emergency, you deserve to know the cost before work begins. We charge a flat $85 diagnostic, and if you proceed with repair, we waive it.

What Emergency Repairs Typically Cost

Most summer AC failures are caused by a handful of common component failures. Here's what to expect with our flat-rate pricing:

  • Capacitor: $500 — the single most common summer failure. Your outdoor unit hums but the fan doesn't spin, or the compressor won't start. Usually repaired same-day within an hour.
  • Contactor: $600 — the electrical switch that turns your outdoor unit on and off. When it fails, nothing happens when the thermostat calls for cooling. Same-day repair.
  • Fan motor: $650-$2,800 depending on the motor type. Standard PSC motors are on the lower end; ECM variable-speed motors are on the higher end. Some motors need to be ordered, but we stock the most common ones.
  • Refrigerant leak + recharge: $350-$1,000. If your system is low on refrigerant, there's a leak. We find it, fix it, then recharge to specs. We never just "top it off" — that's throwing your money away. See our post on HVAC scams to avoid for why "gas and go" is a red flag.
  • Compressor: $3,500-$5,000 — the most expensive repair. If the compressor fails on a system that's 10+ years old, we'll give you the repair price AND the replacement price so you can make an informed decision.

After-Hours and Weekend Service

AC doesn't care what day it is — failures love Friday nights and holiday weekends. Frosty's HVAC charges a $250 after-hours surcharge for emergency calls outside normal business hours. If you're a Frosty Club member, that drops to $212.50 (Basic members get 10% off) with priority scheduling, meaning you move to the front of the line.

Is the after-hours surcharge worth it? If it's 95°F in your house at 9 PM with no relief in sight, yes. Heat doesn't take nights off in Texas.

Emergency Repair vs. Emergency Replacement

Here's the tough question: what if it's not repairable, or the repair doesn't make financial sense?

Typical repair timeline: Most common repairs (capacitor, contactor, simple motor swap) are done same-day. More complex repairs (compressor, evaporator coil) may take 1-3 days if parts need to be sourced.

Typical replacement timeline: We can install a complete new system in 1 day. If you call in the morning, we can often have you cooling by evening. Equipment availability is usually not an issue — we keep common sizes in stock with our suppliers.

Full system replacement runs $8,000-$26,000 depending on the tier and tonnage. Use our AC Replacement Cost Calculator to get a ballpark while you're waiting for the tech, and read our 2026 cost guide for detailed tier breakdowns.

How to Prevent the Next Emergency

Once you're cool again, let's make sure this doesn't happen next summer:

  • Schedule a spring tune-up every year. We catch failing capacitors, worn contactors, low refrigerant, and dirty coils before they cause a breakdown. Our Frosty Club Premium ($300/year) includes two tune-ups — spring AC and fall heating — plus $500 off any repair and 15% off parts.
  • Change your filter monthly in summer. A clogged filter is the number one preventable cause of AC failure.
  • Listen for changes. If your system starts making new sounds, don't ignore the warning signs. A $500 repair in April beats a $5,000 emergency in July.
  • Know your system's age. If it's over 10 years old, start planning financially for replacement. Read our guide on how long AC systems last in Texas so you're not caught off guard.

You'll Get Through This

A broken AC in a Texas summer feels like a crisis, and for your family's comfort and safety, it is one. But it's a solvable crisis. Most repairs are same-day. Even full replacements can be done in 24 hours. You just need a licensed, honest company that answers the phone and shows up.

That's Frosty's. Call (469) 254-0548. We've been doing this since 2018, we serve Farmers Branch, Coppell, Irving, Flower Mound, Lewisville, and Grapevine, and our 94 Google reviews (4.9 stars) speak for themselves. Let's get you cool.
