We Love Our Pets — But Your Ducts Don't
I'm Omar Jacobo, and between my wife Maria and me, we get it — pets are family. But after replacing ductwork in hundreds of Texas homes, I can tell you this: the inside of a pet owner's ducts looks dramatically different from a home without pets, and not in a good way.
If you have dogs, cats, or both — and you live in a Texas home built before 2005 — this article might explain a few things you've been wondering about. Like why the house always smells a little "off" when the AC kicks on. Or why your allergies never fully go away, even indoors.
The Dander Problem Is Bigger Than You Think
Pet dander isn't just visible hair clumps. Dander particles are 5x smaller than what the human eye can see. They stay airborne for hours before settling, and they're so lightweight that your HVAC system's return vents suck them in constantly. Once inside your ductwork, here's what happens:
- Hair accumulates at sag points — In Texas attic ducts, flex duct develops low spots over time. Pet hair collects in these dips like leaves in a gutter.
- Dander coats the duct liner — The interior fiberglass liner in flex duct traps microscopic dander particles. Unlike smooth metal duct, flex duct liner acts like velcro for pet allergens.
- Organic matter decomposes — Over years, trapped hair and dander break down. Combined with the moisture from condensation in our humid Texas climate (60–75% humidity), this creates an ideal breeding ground for bacteria.
- Bacteria grows on the organic material — The warm, dark, moist environment inside your ducts turns decomposing pet matter into a bacterial colony that gets blown through your home with every HVAC cycle.
The Multi-Pet Multiplier
Here's something most people don't realize: ducts that haven't been replaced in 15+ years contain dander from every pet you've ever owned — and potentially from the previous homeowner's pets too. If you bought a 1980s Coppell home that's had three families and six dogs over 40 years, all of that biological material is still in your ductwork. It never leaves on its own.
In Farmers Branch (1960s–1980s ranch homes), many of these ducts are original to the house. That's 40+ years of accumulated pet dander in homes that have likely housed multiple families and multiple pets.
The Filter Catch-22
Good filters help — MERV 11 or higher captures most pet dander. But there's a problem: higher-MERV filters restrict more airflow. On an older system with already-deteriorated ducts, adding a high-MERV filter can reduce airflow enough to freeze your evaporator coil. I see this constantly.
The right approach is a system designed for filtration: properly sealed ductwork (no leaks), correctly sized returns (adequate airflow), and a blower motor that can handle the higher static pressure of a quality filter.
Pet Owner HVAC Maintenance Checklist
- Change your filter monthly — not every 3 months. With pets, monthly is non-negotiable in Texas.
- Vacuum registers and return vents weekly — pet hair accumulates on vent covers and gets sucked back in.
- Keep pets groomed — regular grooming reduces the amount of dander entering your system by up to 40%.
- Schedule annual tune-ups — a Frosty Club Premium membership ($300/year) includes 2 annual tune-ups that include coil cleaning and airflow checks. Basic ($99/year) gets you 10% off any repair and priority scheduling.
- Inspect your ducts — if they're over 15 years old, have a professional assess them. The accumulation may warrant full replacement.
When Replacement Makes Sense
If your ducts are 15+ years old and you've had pets for most of that time, replacement is the only way to eliminate the buildup. Duct cleaning can remove surface dust, but the dander embedded in the fiberglass liner — decomposing and growing bacteria — can't be cleaned out of old flex duct.
New ductwork with proper sealing means 100% of your air passes through the filter. No more contaminated air bypassing filtration through duct leaks. Your pets stay comfortable, your family breathes clean air, and your system runs efficiently.
